if the idea of the game is to advance down the field to the opposing teams flag-base, how is a 1' head-start not an advantage? At what distance would people consider it an advantage? 2'? 5'?
If it's no big deal, why don't they let people start a little bit ahead in the 100m Olympic finals?
That's right. I went there.
I'll even go there again - But what about the Olympics? How could we be taken seriously as a sport?

It is not that they are 1" ahead, but 1" back...

From my point of view, rules must be enforced. If people keep doing it is because it is not enforced. Even if there is no harm done or there is no advantage on it, it is a rule. If it is not a big deal then drop it from the rules....

Agreed. if refs still insist on eliminating me for turning my gun off while another player who has hung the flag is being checked, they can sure as hell enforce this!

out of bounds = out of play, simple as that... same for any sport, if a football, rugby ball, tennis ball is out of bounds....
saw it at the one final at st tropez last year i watched, ran the whole length to the corner behind the line then came into his bunker - just said 'surely he's out...'

The valid reason is that if the flag hanger is called out and you need to "hang the flag" you'd have to turn your gun on again! This could (especially back in the days of 'cheat' software) alter the mode/rate of fire or even velocity! Plus, by turning your gun off you are definitely taking yourself out of play, just as you are socking up or leaving the field before the point is approved.
