Thanks to Pete and P8ntballer for putting up this new forum :) Folk reading this may be thinking, what's all this competitive woodsball about and why does it have it's own forum? Competitive paintball is surely played on sup'air fields, through the CPPS and the Millennium...

I am now in my nineteenth year of playing paintball and I came in right at the end of woodsball and the introduction of sup'air fields. What I don't want to do is tell you that "the woods is where I started off" as that is not the reason I enjoy playing in the woods now.

Woodsball has more variables, bigger fields, more interesting plays and is a much greater challenge for teamworking. Ian Miller, the former editor or PGi, once said to me that paintball was about playing the game in front of you and playing a game of chess in your head at the same time. That is something that is amplified on woods fields.

I see the teams at woodsball events generally having a better experience at the end of their day, regardless of whether they won or lost, they got a lot of playing time out on the field. That is not always in the case for sup'air where getting stomped 4-0 normally only leaves one team smiling.

Full disclosure - I am a co-promoter of the Woodland Masters and I do have an interest in growing competitive woodsball. Before the woodland masters, woodsball helped get my team, ECI, back together in 2013 and it is those core of players that will be playing 2016 in the CPPS Elite division.

Enough from me. If you already play these events, what do you enjoy about playing competitive woodsball? Never played, what do you want to know about woodsball?

I have to agree that the woods has lots of different positives to offer.

Reason I say different is because by the nature of other formats they get taken away..

So what am I talking about?

Game time? - there is a lot of game time. If you want to run/get far up the field you can, but equally you can be just as effective if you want to take your time, dive into bracken and be a bit more sneaky

This in turn allows a wider demographic of players, which makes it even more inclusive as big/small, tall/short, young/old players can take part. (I say "even more" as paintballers are naturally inviting anyway)

There isn't so much need to have the latest kit either, as long as you have decent goggles, a gun that can shoot a paintball you can pretty much play.

Woodland can be cheaper - the woods are there, sites run on them, if the fields aren't being used then allowing a tournament to be run on them increases revenue. I say its cheaper as site owners don't need to buy new bunkers every year or have extravagant venues such as islands or prisons etc with higher insurance costs.

As mentioned above, games have greater variables. If you want to be good on a set field, you need to have walked it tirelessly and played it multiple times however given that stuff can just grow... if you play the field on a different day it may just be a bit different.

If youve not watched this video already.. have you been hiding under a rock?!? :sneaky:

The main part of "training" for woodsball is just getting comfortable with your kit and knowing the fields. spend around 30 minutes walking the field and knowing where you are going to break to, and more importantly where you think the opposition will break to.
If you are down holmbush on the saturday before the next event then come and find me or my team (Steve UK Predators) and I'll give you a basics guide on walking fields.
Pro teams such as the Turks take training seriously and can still be found training the night before a tournament at the local inn house often til 2 or 3 in the morning, whereas teams like ours tend to just relax the night before with cucumber sandwiches and a nice game of bridge.

You can preorder Personally I would order 5 boxes and then buy more from valken on the day.
I prefer shooting valken redemption Pro, but some use a lower grade ball, it all depends on the marker and preference. I know a few teams used the valken fate, as it's a harder ball.

A rough guide is usually one box per game per team we find, we used the Redemption Pro last time out with no issues.
