Hi
I am making ,for my A level project at school, a paintball gear bag and i was wondering those of you who have owned a bag what you want from a good bag and what has been a short coming of a gear bag.
Any comments would be helpful thank you.
Here are the questions:

  1. Average size bag you need to hold one set of playing gear?
  2. The average price you would pay for a medium size bag?
  3. What are the basic features you want from a paintball gear bag?
  4. Your Height?
  5. Wheel or no wheels?
  6. Weight of the bag which is comfortable (To push/carry)?
  7. Any extra comments

You can post your answer in the thread or direct message me if you would like.

Thank you for any help.

Tom

I’m not going to answer your questions properly, just to be awkward

Average size bag you need to hold one set of playing gear?

For a tournament player I would recommend up to two sets of playing gear, and clean clothes.

e.g. for a tournament weekend:

One set of goggles
One pair of playing footwear (cleats etc) in Spring / summer or two pairs in autumn / winter weather
Two sets of playing clothing - trousers (pants if you’re American) and jerseys (Training set and playing set)
Playing underwear – slide shorts, bounce vest
Perhaps one set of team branded clothing for the podium (Clean t-shirt, hoody)
Clean clothes, footwear etc to go home in
Pod belt

Extras:
Tools, batteries, spares
Marker, air, hopper – perhaps two sets
Barrels / inserts
Stand
Pots

For a scenario player possibly switch podbelt for vest, but perhaps still have two sets of playing gear depending on the site and season allowing changing to dry clothes for the afternoon or second day

(Personal preferences would vary depending on what gear you carry, whether you own the car you are in etc – e.g. just have playing kit for the day in the gear bag to carry to the staging area and the rest in the car

The average price you would pay for a medium size bag?
As little as possible. I have only bought second hand for full on paintball gear bags up to £100, new for day sacks, new for non-specific sports / general bags.

What are the basic features you want from a paintball gear bag?
Absolute basic – lots of space, separate areas / divider options (Ideally Velcro reconfigurable).

More featured would be niceties such as slots to put in pods, a barrel roll, a soft padded area for goggles, a dirt resistant area for footwear, a roll out clean ‘worksurface’ for gun teching, even perhaps a rollout softish surface to stand on when stripping off and changing

Your Height?
6’

Wheel or no wheels?
With wheels, ideally off road capable
It’s easier to pick up a bag that has wheels then to drag a bag without wheels

Weight of the bag which is comfortable (To push/carry)?

Any extra comments
Depending on the bag, if you can make it solid then it can become a seat (roller tool chests often make good gear bags)

The only thing i'll say is, every wheeled paintball kit bags i've seen aren't designed to be used at paintball sites, the wheels are too small and they have little ground clearance, they're designed to be pulled down smooth surfaces.

Thanks for posting up, @Maxwell1209 . It's a good question to ask.

Planet Eclipse make the gearbag that practically everyone uses, or they use a version of this with similar features and dimensions.

Good points:-

1. Very well made.
2. Big enough to carry everything you need.

Bad points:-

1. Costs £185 new.
2. The outside will get covered in mud and paint stains the first time it is exposed to an English summer at a paintball site.
3. Not easy to clean and dry out.
4. Wheels are small and will get caked in mud the first time you use it.

I've had a couple of these over the years, because I believe they are the best paintball gearbag you can buy. To my mind, though, they aren't perfect.

But bear in mind every other gearbag you buy - be it Motocross, skate, etc - will be difficult to clean because it is a soft shell over a hard frame. You can't just throw it in the washing machine like your jersey.

So, what I would like is something that is cheap, easy to clean, and big enough to carry everything except your clean clothes - which you leave in your car.

My suggestion is that you make a slightly larger version of this, with bigger wheels. Make it around 3ft tall, and sturdy enough to sit on. Have a nice big pull-out handle to pull it along, with large wheels. If you could put a holder on the side to hold a flask or beer cans, that would be just dandy.

This type of roller can be jetwashed easily, or even wiped down. Plastic is more resistant to stains than fabric.

Or if you want to go super-cheap, one of these with a detachable frame that has large wheels and a handle. You could produce these in any colour, and again they are easy to clean. Team logos could even be printed on them, or just stickers. You could include dividers for the large internal compartment.

At the end of the day a gear bag is just that. A bag for gear.

Look on ebay for army surplus deployment bags, no wheels but can be converted to a big rucksack.

Alternatively here are some examples, I've yet to find the perfect bag and believe that a rucksack for some items and a gearbag for others is the best solution.

I can remember eclipse gear bags being a fair bit less than £100 brand new, is there really a need to be paying more than that? I know there's inflation and that but if you can get past brand snobbery there are some excellent alternatives. After having a quick nose online there are some paintball manufacturers charging £250 for a kit bag??!!?? I mean, sorry, you ain't gonna like me saying this but that's daylight robbery.

it's a f*cking gear bag, catch yourselves on.

Now, if anyone wants to send me some gear bags I'll cheerfully do a write up and comparison. Actually, take that as a challenge, send me your bags and justify the pricing.
