Might be a silly question but is it unreasonable to ask a site to pay a up front fee and then bring my own paint if I have gear? I'm trying to get into the sport but paying £100+ for a box of 2000 is gonna kill me after a while!

You need to find a site that does walkons

Rental Paintball is the core business of paintball, and its the rental customers who pay the overheads to enable sites to exist
The business model sells the experience of a day out Paintballing. Don’t look at it as £100 for a case of 2000, but about £30-£40 (500 balls) or £50-£60 (1000 balls) for a day shooting your mates.
Walkons are typically once a month at an independent site, where you pay a bit more for entry and a lower paintball price on the basis of a case at a time

Check out this thread for a rough guide to various flavours of paintball and their relative costs (it could do with an update but is broadly the same)

Thank you Tom that's really helpful actually! How would you suggest I go about finding a site that does walk one near me? I've messaged a few but not had any positive results, and also posted a thread on here but doesn't seem there's many experienced guys in my area, is it just a case of contacting every site near me?

Your posts on here are a good start, but Facebook has fractured the community.
Have a go at googling paintball in the area (though Delta Force will show high in the results)
Have a look out for Skirmish sites etc
Bullswood is a good site that I’ve played for scenarios

Not a pro but you guys should know that earplugs might help. I have a hearing condition and I have to wear custom earplugs all day when I'm outside. I was once accidentally hit by paint exactly in my left ear and if I didn't have earplugs my uncle said that it could have ruptured my ear drum because of the pressure. I was just really lucky that I had my Big Ears on that day.
