I've been using rechargable PP3's or AA's in my hopper or markers for around 18 months. I've had no real problems other than finding they discharge more quickly than alkaline batt's in really cold weather.

I always check mine on a voltage meter (bought from maplins) to test output.

Brands tried so far are energiser, Duracell and Ansmann

I have same Maplins voltage meter to test batteries ;)

and that is the odd thing on the PP3 (9V) it is showing a full charge on the meter BUT when i put them in velocity it shows red light and can barely make it spin. If i put ordinary batteries in it works fine

are you using the PP3 (9V) in a marker which probably uses a lot less power or are you using them in a hopper?

A voltmeter won't give a reliable indication of the state of a battery -- you need to put a load on it to get an idea of how much oomph is left in it. 9v batteries are worse than AAs for this behaviour. A totally dead 9v battery can still read over 9v with a voltmeter, but drop to almost nothing as soon as any load at all is put on it.

Some multimeters have a specific battery test setting, which puts a load on the battery while reading its voltage.

The capacity of NiCd or NiMH batteries is much much lower than that of alkalines, although the output voltage holds up better as the cells discharge, so how long they last will depend on the type of load they are driving. Lithium Ion chemistry batteries have similar capacities to alkalines, whilst being lighter (and rechargeable, of course) but they have different output voltages and need special charging circuitry, so they're not a drop-in replacement except where products have been developed for specific applications (e.g. loader packs.)

I use the lower rated batts in markers - 9.0V Duracell 150mah / 8.4V Energiser 175 mah

Better ones like the 8.4V Ansmann 200 or 250 mah in hoppers

Also have Duracell AA's for my Halo B http://uk.farnell.com/duracell/5000394065710/battery-nimh-2650mah-aa-pk4/dp/1330278?crosssellid=1330278&crosssell=true

The Maplins checker is a bit hit & miss, but ok for sorting flat from charged mid game. I also have a small multi meter that's a bit more accurate for checking charge at home.

If any one is going to the big game I can test there batteries on a fancy charger that will give me a discharge curve, basically if they are good or knackerd!

Hmm, I still haven't had any luck getting batteries although this thread has been usefull.

I'm going to use standard disposable batteries for my ego 08 but I want a rechargeable 9v for my Halo hopper.. but I can only find a 175 MaH 9v (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Energizer-HR22-rechargeable-battery-voltage/dp/B000IWXVU6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1236604933&sr=8-8)
when I think I need a 250 MaH? Where can I get those? (And a recharger?)
These babies 500mah and a trusted efficient seller..
Failing that Maplins have either 250 or 300 mah...:D

They look pretty good.. pricey but good. Do you have some?

What about the charger (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/iPowerUS-rechargeable-9-volt-battery-CHARGER_W0QQitemZ260326273799QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ConsumerElectronics_Batteries_SM?hash=item260326273799&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1683|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318) Do you use that one? Is it good? And are you in the UK? (because they offer adapter for use in UK or US.)
