Bottle Blows Up

Oh hell I wanted to stay out of this thread, but some big misconceptions need to be cleared up.

Right, here we go.

Oppy - You're wrong. Sorry but you are. The whole Stako have "proved" anything argument isn't about the Madrid incident or anything about tanks exploding. That was about Max last year where bottles were bubbling/leaking through the fibre wrap during filling and HPAC imposed a filling ban at the event. Stako then argued it was a safe by-product of the design and the ban was lifted as per your press release quote. Please don't perpetuate that it relates in any way to "proving" anything related to these incidents.

The Madrid incident was indeed put down to oil in the regulator.
The Budapest incident had been too, possibly contaminated from the compressor - the plastic liner had scorch marks/bubble indicating a fire inside the tank. (There's a pic in an old PGi)
The Freekz incident is under investigation

Facts:
I'm very happy to stand corrected :) I was wrong there  and man enough to call myself a chump!

My understanding is that although "Carbon Fibre" bottles meet all the recommended safety standards, but it is the fact that they are carbon fibre which makes them more susceptible to bottle fires. The risk is substantially reduced by a fill rate lower than is standardly used.
Most sites will probably have there fill rigs at a level that is suitable for standard fibre wrap (Aluminium/Kevlar) upto 3000psi, but too high for Carbon Fibre. When you take into account the amount of heat generated filling from 0 - 4500psi compared to from 0 - 3000psi, it is highly possible that some sites filling to 4500psi and some to 3000psi are perfectly safe for standard bottles, but fill too fast for the "Carbon Fibre" bottles.

The issue then is where/or with whom does to problem lie

"Carbon Fibre" bottles - Well the bottle is perfectly safe if used within required limits. That is proven

Fill rig suppliers - Well the rigs and fill rate will have been tested against standard bottle styles and caused no incidents. Again Proven

My view is that "Carbon Fibre" bottles were designed with sup air tournie players in mind, who normally just top up after each game as opposed to full fill.
If you wish to use one then only fill it to 4500psi at a tournie on an H-PAC fill station, which we all know are set up to slow fill within the tolerances for Carbon Fibre bottles or if you are at a regular site then fill only at a slow fill 3000psi output.

The end of the day, you may not be bothered about your life, but think of the half dozen or more stood around you are well.

Each incident is getting worse, thankfully Nige will be back to shoot another day. If you heed the warnings - we will stay safe

Because I have a stako, and I was trying to fill as slow as I possibly could, but the slightest move on the handle would make it fill very quickly, so prehaps if there was a 3k fill as the post above suggested, prehaps that'd fill alot slower & safer? (Yes I know we wouldnt be getting the full capabilities of the stako with the 3k fill rather than 4.5k, but atleast we'd be keeping our lives, equipment and others around us safe)

Kitch,

Could you please tell us what state the connector is in? If my understanding is correct, it caught fire during the incident.

then why not fill from empty slowly to 3k, leave for a few minutes and then top up on the 4.5k line? then just keep the bottle topped betwen games?

just a thought, i know it wouldn't always be practicable or practical.

Out of interest, nige, were you topping up or filling up from near empty?
Had 2k in the tank mate as I had just lent it to someone to use.
I WILL STATE THAT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS LENT OUT, THE GUY WHO BORROWED IT TOOK IT FROM ME FROM THE FIELD GATE AND GAVE ME IT BACK STRAIGHT AFTER THE GAME SO PLEASE DONT TRY AND BLAME HIM!
God forbid, if he would of tried filling it.
If I hadnt of lent it, I wouldnt of been filling.
