bottle reg pressure gauge spilt

i just had a look at the pressure gauge on my air bottle reg and it looks like on the plastic on it has been pushed down and caused it to crack.

Its not gone all the way through but will i lose air through it or is the plastic over the gauge just there purely to protect the dial??

a bit ago someone had water in their guage and they were told to drill a small hole in it to get rid of the water.
so im guessing that its just there to protect the dial.
