Yeah i did look into irc, i run my own server currently. However from my experience people are less likely to use irc as it involves finding and downloading a client and then figuring out how to join a specific server and so on, whereas a chatroom is just click and play.

I am however considering running an irc room for those who are happy to use it and then having the java chat just connect to this but before i do any real coding i wanted to gauge how many people will use it.

I would definetly use it, but irc is easy to police as you can setup bots to stop potty mouthes etc.

Its what we use we have IRC and java based running out of one room.

It is tempting to code something similar, the only problem is the attention irc draws really, script kiddies love nothing more than an old school irc DOS attack which really is a pain whereas ive had two separate chartrooms up for a week now and not one attack.
