invert mini eyes ?

A friend has just bought a mini and hoping to play tournys . Now I know how to turn the eyes of and on but is there no way the eyes can be turned off if you chop in game ?? Obviously you can turn the gun off to do that but , in a tourny that would then be classed as gun tampering ,yes? Seems a bit odd that factory teams used them like that ?? Or is that where upgrade boards come in ?

Empire replaced the optimus boards with shock wave ones. Tap the power button to turn eyes off and up to date ramp settings.

Can the original board by updated/flashed or does it need a new board to be " Ref friendly and tourny regulated "
