Don't know? - but I believe the patent is to do with having a dataport on the circuit board.

Probably cheaper for them to upgrade the boards than pay for a licence to have the port, design a program to flash the boards and make the cables

What is it to upgrade the board and grips £10? - cheaper than an equalink cable from WAS which cost about £35
