Location, Location.
I have weak ankles. There. Ive said it.

Are there any exercises i can do at home to improve the muscle strength around them, so they are not so prone to tweaks and buckling?

Tapioca Ladder?

You basically put one foot in front of the other and then pull that one back while thrusting the other foward, kinda like powerwalking minus the moving part.

You'll look like a ****er but it really does help.

i broke my right ankle three years ago (on a trampoline), and its plagued me since, i find that wearing a sports strap helps if recently gone over on it (fecking unlevel pavements) and playing sports.

had physio on it at the time, and it helped alot, have you ever thought of going down that route?

when i did my ankle my physio gave me a bunch of hopping exercises, up & down stairs, forward backwards, left and right, they were designed to strengthen the ankle. if its both ankles your having problems with i guess just alternate
