There is some discussion about the increase in the number of available TV channels has split the number of viewers per channel resulting in less funds available per channel to spend on quality programming - thus quality decreases. Channels then re-use shows and formats that they know are successful. If you're interested in knowing more, there's a wealth of information about the topic in journals available on-line.

I think this is the best answer for sure. The yanks create a lot of TV shows, but there are a lot of yanks. The same number of channels in the UK would mean a much lower viewing number, and nothings lower budget than re-runs & reality.

If you can, watch the film idiocracy, it gives a good intro into whats going on, and the fact that the media just sell celebrity life to the population that have nothing better to do than read about what Charlotte Church bought from Homebase as their life is so dull has spawned this media ogre that blights us now.

I was at a panto with my kids in December, and a 9 year old girl when asked what she wanted to be when she was older, replied 'famous'.

Famous for what? Sport? Acting? Murder? If we bring up kids with this kind of view, well the media are guilty of dumbing down the next generation as much as the parents that let their kids grow up exposed to this culture of fame for no reason. Those that are famous for nothing in particular, Jordan, Paris, Peaches, Tori, etc etc are all proven to be remarkably stupid, but the PR people that manage them have hit gold and made them fortunes. IF Jordan was left alone to write and create her own books, they would be 20 pages long and come with a set of crayons. Entrepreneur? No, just happy to put her name to any tat knowing 12-15 year old girls will swallow it up, and to call her a role model for women is a joke, she only became know for getting naked for mens magazines and soft porn. The rest was down to her assocoation with the annoying husband.

I find most of the content on ITV now just a phone in channel for Karaoke and dancing contests with very little programming that interests me. The other half has GMTV on in the morning and I find the 'journalists' that host that programme to be way below par in the grey matter as well. ITV is the haven for the bored housewife, they have a lot to answer for too! If the commercial channels want some of the licence fee, they better provide content that is worthy of it!
