But to have it as a fair test, the whole of the barrel would have to be immersed up to the point where the ball enters. Not only that but if the system were to work, then there would be issues about leaving paint in once used, as it would be unusable in a very quick time. What about using compressed water to power it, then no tell tale bubbles to show the opposition which barrier (reef) you're hiding behind...

you can't compress water much unfortunately. That's how it's used to transmit force in a hydraulic system.
