Been far to busy so sorry for not getting back to folk.

I'll pop up sound card details when I get in and look for the cable.

As for the lappy, it had been sitting unused in a cupboard at work long before I joined the company and I have never booted it.

If you have a spare HDD it sounds like a plan and yes I do have a charger for it.
