Have you looked at the nikon d3000? It's a good begining one and really simple to use. They also do a book which i bought for here d3000 for dummies which she found amazing.

I bought a D3000 for college work and recently done some Paintball photography with it and was really impressed!

I would sure recommend it! however it lacks 'Live view' and does not have 'HD Video'

Either the D3000, or the Nikon D40. Both great starter DSLR's... If no luck on here try ebay? ;)

ps. Dont wanna shoot off topic

Here are some action shots I took with my Nikon D3000 last weekend.

It's true the D3000 does lack video but for £200 extra you get the D5000 and if you wait till the end of the month the d3100 comes our which is better than both of them.

So the cost of D3000 and D5000 should come down by the end of the month. Problem is the D3100 does not have all the ease of use as the D3000 as the D3000 has a guide built into the camera to help

Thanks for the input so far, will check out the D3000, looks like you're getting some good results with it Taylor.
Will deffo be checking out ebay, initial budget is £150-£300 depending on model and what's included, I don't really need to worry about HD recording just yet but definitely something I'll be looking into eventually.
Hoping to possibly pick one up in the next 2/3 weeks as I'm going on holiday and would love to get some quality shots from Brunei and Perth whilst on my travels.
