Has XSV changed the face of tournament Paintball forever?

Two NPPLs and an NXL win for the team that defines chequebook Paintball...can anyone compete with Mr Franchise? Has Telford redefined what it takes to build a winning team? Are the days of organic teams like tha Ironkids coming together over? Now XSV is paying players, giving signing on fees and winning, why would anyone play for anyone else? And, rather than criticizing him, shouldn't players be falling on their knees and thanking him for running a team like it should be run? Or not.

XSV definitely has an awesome program put in place. They are winning and doing it consistantly so something must be going right! I think indeed they HAVE started what will become the norm among top teams in terms of salary. Only time will tell.

XSV and RL both.

Why should paintball be any difference than any other sport?

- Rich and Sergey have just been the first two to realise it

So why are so many people bitching about it?

And why are certain players on XSV reputedly looking to leave a winning team that pays them?

And how do other teams respond?

And to open it up further since you started it, why are the Russians going backwards?

Because they are envious - or in the case of industry, they are not used to a team having the upper hand in the sponsorship ;)

Chemistry possibly - some captains have a fairly autocratic style - and some players don't like that.... trust me, I KNOW :D

And how do other teams respond?
They copy the concept, once they have the players and sponsors to do it successfully

And to open it up further since you started it, why are the Russians going backwards?
They are not, they are getting caught by teams copying their style ;)

Checkbook paintball brings with it a whole host of problems.

First off the main financier has to be kept sweet, and if the team captain falls out with them who'll go first? I bet the money will talk. What do the sponsors actually get out of it? is a 300,000K + investment actually going to pay off if winnings go back to the players?

Next is ego, and paintball is even more ego-driven than most major sports, so the coaches will have to start getting the big personalities to match like Belichick and prove themselves again. Can Rich keep that team of egos together when you're taking 10 top players to an NPPL all who expect/want to play.

Because professional when associated with sports means a lot more than just getting paid. It changes everything and changes it in ways most of today's players either don't understand or choose to ignore until it happens to them or friends of theirs. Beyond that personalities and playing time are the biggest issues and that ain't just paintball. And as for XSV changing everything, sure, until the appearance of upward momentum and improvements peaks and begins to slide down the other side of that mountain--as it inevitably will. For now it's working. Just like Dynasty before them and everyone was on that bandwagon. When it's stops working it'll be something else seen as the be all end all. Regardless of how you get there it always about the right mix of talent, personalities (motivation, mental toughness, drive, etc.) and leadership.

Interesting point - historiacally, the winngest teams have ALL been industry owned, all of a sudden Dynasty and XSV turn that applecart on its head...hence Dye's big money moves with The Ironmen.

WDP and Planet still don't own a Pro team...is this weird, or sensible?

XSV isn't bank rolled by the team and have the big sponsor behind them, it's just not a National / Dye etc...

It's sensible.

Manufacturers should not own teams - you don't see Nike or Adidas own teams, because of the risk of feelings towards that team reflecting negatively on them.... while the upside of owning a team is close to zero.
