I reckon the only way it'd really be suitable for tv is if it goes all wwf. Have a series that focuses on one league and the different teams within it, with written and acted stories of each team and their various beef's with other teams/players that each would get more and more ridiculous and soap-esque.

An ideal example of a story line would be:
there is a young slightly slack player who has lots of potential but is held back by a superstar attitude and bloated ego.
An older experienced player nobs the younger player's mum, obviously he gets angry and then is waiting for them to face each other on field, when the opportunity arises he tries to do a dirty mugging run on the older player, but it all goes tit's up because the younger player is too inexperienced, thus he learns humility and trains (insert montage) so that one day when they have a draw against each other he can get his revenge.
Then in the final event of the season they are drawn against each other again and we have a showdown for the season finale. Have a few of these stories going on and plenty of cringe smack talk between the events.

Add beers and gambling and then maybe, maybe you could have a viable tv show.
