Something I just spent much too long working out, but I found it quite the puzzle!

So.

Here is the question and there are multiple answers required.

I have a box. 1 Meter, by 1 meter, by 1 meter. The box must be filled with as many possible ball bearings as possible and still close. The ball bearings are 2.5mm in diameter.

Question1. How many ball bearings will fit in this box if filled to max capacity
Question2. What is the total surface area of all the bearings in the box.

The answer is incredibly deceptive. But I did work it out eventually.

How thick is the cardboard (I presume its a cardboard box)?

Although the box is 1 meter, by 1 meter, by 1 meter; the box could be 1cm thick so the actual space for the ball bearings could be 99cm, by 99cm, by 99cm.

More accruately then. The box when closed has exact internal dimentions of 1m x 1m x 1m and there is no hinge or similar protruding into the box or nor does the dimentions of the box ever change.

As you put it that way you can fit 551 Ball bearings (551.782 if you want the cut one up)

Working:
Ball bearing Radius= 1.25mm
volume= (4/3)(pi)(radius)cubed
1 ball bearing volume= 8.181230869mm
1 meter/0.008.181230869 meter= 551.782

Been so long since i've done maths...... though I feel i've gone wrong.

Simple logic here.

a 2.5mm diameter ball is going to be approximately the size of a ballpoint pen nib. If you think you can only fit ~550 in a 1 meter box, you must have a very distorted reality :D
