Just a note but i am working (slowly) on starting a club at Leeds Uni so hopefully there should be one by the beginning of next year...i would recommend choosing a university based on the course and just starting a club if there isn't one, you've got 3/4 years to spend wherever you choose and you're paying a lot for the education...

as a member of pompey uni and the paintball team (tho i play for relentless) i somewhat agree and disagree with comments here.

as far as paintball at portsmouth uni is concerned (and i'm fairly new to sup'air) i have never met a more determined team whose sole practice is to improve and gain more recognition in the paintball scene that not only promotes portsmouth uni as having a successful team through good training habits, but allows players to individually improve and allow them to make a go of any future plans they have with the game.

AJermstad, i cant help but feel *edit*some*edit* your comments are completely detrimental to uni paintball improving and getting more on the scene. Pompey uni are always looking to get outside help (many thanks to the lessons Sanchez/H-S#1 and #2 have taught us) and i have no doubt at all that the piss ups, training and bit of fun pompey uni have as a team/society are what makes the team so collective. i will argue to the end that each individual player has more team spirit and willingness to improve than many teams put together.

the problem with uni paintball is the cost and that comes down to loans and funding and i dont know all the details but at the beginning of the year i believe the loan we had was about £300, now tell me what you expect us to do with that???

anyways, back on track - sumo89, i've dropped u a pm with the link to the pompey uni paintball teams forum. be good if you drop by, we're a great bunch of people who just roll off each other with no problems and always have a laugh (major piss-up last night at the athletics ball as our vice-pres got an award for commitment) but still hold the game as the central reason we all joined and pay the money we do to enjoy a game we love!

Hey Mew, I knew my comments would come accross like that to a certain extent as I wanted to over emphasise a little how insignificant a factor paintball should be in choice of University - a major life changing decision in a lot of peoples lives. And while pball might be a major factor in some students and prospective students eyes, you should try not to let it influence a decison as big as where you choose to go to uni. There's always ways to play, get better, have fun no matter where your learning.

It's true that the uni scene has come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years - Steve has done some amazing work! There are a lot of students out there with the drive and determination to be the best, and they will likely play a part in the future of high level brit ball. It's great to hear about pompey coming together as a club - I hope to see good results from ya!
Heck, I've even founded a club at one uni, and might even found one at another uni next year :p But until we start getting scholarships and grant money for playing ball at uni (which has already begun to happen in America btw, but I wouldn't expect it here anytime soon) then it's rather rediculous to let a universities current club status influence your decision about where to attend.

cheers for the support.

i agree about never having the funding like america, and with all respect, i dont know which uni club you set up, but if it was the rollercoaster ride i imagine, it wouldnt have been easy. thats why, when you sign up and you see the commitment of 5-10 people who want to make it work, the dedication, time and effort put in to build a healthier team, its worth it.

its got to be made aware that playing ball at university is possible, you just need to know where, what you want and need to know the costs. its not completely impossible. but the part about socialising etc, is an individual factor of uni regardless of other influences, and there's no reason that with good self-discipline you cant handle work, play and suffer the occaisional hangovers.

Sumo - at the end, you get what you put in and back on track (again) most universities have a homepage or websites that explain clubs, societies and social networking at uni. if you're just doing your ucas stuff, you have to look at whats right for you and adapt, but by all means, consider the little things that will make it the best 3/4 years of your life. ie - location, social factors, reason for going, cause they are what help you through the hard times. and i'm still living that lesson now, with another year left to survive ;)

Al fella they some pretty ignorant comments! Were not some clowns that rolled outta bed and fell onto a paintball field we train more than the majority of paintball teams out there. I dont think you were trying to be harsh so dont worry about it, but it came across a bit patronising.

"Dont let the university paintball team influence your choice" BULLS**T haha Unless your doing law your gonna be spending the majority of your time twiddling your thumbs and anyone thats even seen a university can tell yah you do sweet FA in your first year. We train at least every other week, Dan Maskell from shock has taken a fair few sessions for us, so has Matt ex jags player. We won the last div 3 nspl event looking for promotion to div 2 next year. We're also gonna get some snap cages for next year which we will be training a couple of nights a week in.

Obviously dont come if the course is sh*t but we dont piss about if you wanna train alot and do it on the cheap come down to portsmouth and i can guarantee you will become a better paintball player, probably more so than playing for half the teams outside uni.

I had 30 hours of lectures a week in my first year plus 3 pieces of coursework every week (1 maths, 1 electronics, 1 programming). Hardly sweet FA.

And AJ is exactly right, you should consider the courses you want to do. Then look at the universites that do that course and come up with a shortlist. THEN compare the social aspects to decide which of your shortlisted you'd rather go for.

Uni paintball in the UK will not contribute to the pool of 'high caliber paintball players' for quite a while I feel.
TBH nobody cares about uni paintball in the slightest apart from the students themselves,
@AJ:

:mad: WTF man, uni paintball is the perfect opportunity for players to better them self, their paintball and open their eyes to the world, and uni paintball is a brilliant, competitive and passionate thing to be involved in, and unless you are a "present day" uni baller or chairman of a club, then i cant see what use your derogatory, downgrading, generalist comments have in this thread.

ballers at uni are the most passionate i have met, and it is a good release after 17 essays, uni paintball is fun, and great grooming fields for local and pro teams

@SUMO and every 1 else, :

choose a uni for the uni, find local teams

my mates have sweet FA to do, but im in lectures 9 - 5 every day, depends on course, and yes money is allways a problem

Hey sumo I'm in the same position as you. I do want to go to a university that has a decent paintball set up but thats not all I want to go for.

To be perfectly homnest though, if it isn't there, start one! Manchester and Warwick don't as far as I know so far but I'm sure enough people who want to play exist down there somewhere to get a team (if outside uni) or a uni team going!

Good luck! And if you go to Manc or Warwick and start a union...let me know :p
