A lot of guys will tell you to start with a pump, but I say start with a solid mech semi that you can learn to take care of. Tippmans are good entry level markers and so are Automags. Of course I'm partial to mags, but really I don't think there is anything simpler.

Bar none, the best thing you can invest in is a good mask. Get something that gives you good vision and breath-ability.
