LoL - yeh some weird censorship going on there.
I wasn't at S****horpe unfortunately, but it does sound like a good event from what you say. How many other events have you been to this year though - I think a lot of them are improving a great deal and more and more "showcase" or "stadium" events are being held.
Glad you enjoyed the tournament, but I hope you're just using it as a model - not saying that it was the only event this that has been up to standard.
I agree that getting spectators to an event and then providing good facilities is the key to growth and success though. And of course, their safety is paramount.

No mate, there have been quite a few good ones, but that one and the castle really stood out. I've not been to a tournament that was bad for paintballers, that's not my point. If we want more recognition then we need more tournaments that are accessible to spectators. Then they see what we are really about.
I mean, honestly, the only TV coverage we have is Xfire(dear god) and Mission Paintball which is on right after a program about competitive computer games.. is that who we want to be put together with? stick us with the mountainbikers, boarders and Jackass.
P.S: I play P.C games and I love 'em, I've just got the decency to be a bit embarassed by it.

I still think laser tags pretty cool though-- be good the night before a tournament in a pitch black field..

I admit, I'm too lazy to scroll through all the posts on this topic, but I do think something got left out:
The inability of paintball as an industry to create an effective manufacturers association to address the negativity the sport has garnered.
Sure, the Paintball Products Manufacturers Association says they are the mouthpiece of the industry, but what have they done to dispell the negative myths surround the sport.
Then there's the lack of support from the NPPL, PSP, and other leagues to promote the sport in a positive manner. OK, so NPPL is gonna start a seven-man series, but when was the last time you saw them go to bat for the sport in the mainstream media?
Unfortunately, there's too much infighting among the different leagues to create an effective positive PR campaign for paintball ... maybe it's time to put the camo back on and head into the woods again.

For instance, how many times have we seen TV shows that have scenes with actors getting shot and injured? Whoever helps the TV producers put these together should be hung out to dry in my opinion.

In my experience, the bad rep paintball gets isn't from serious rec players or closed minded idiots outside the sport. The real problem is the people that have played once or twice with rentals at woods fields. Those games are almost entirely military based, be it a D-Day recreation, or an escort down the Ho-Chi Minh trail. What those players take away from the game is the idea that all paintball is just the History channel brought to life. Serious rec players understand that there are other kinds of paintball, and many I know are careful to make that distinction. Its these one time ballers, and the number of people who have played once then stopped is huge, that spread the military image of paintball.
I'm not saying this military theme is bad, I personally enjoy these military recreations periodically, but tournament paintball needs to draw a distinction between itself and recballing, which is why I'm excited about X-Ball. I think very soon were going to see ESPN and other sports networks taking an interest in tournament paintball as the sport grows as a new extreme sport.

And as for recballers, its either paintball or airsoft, and those airsoft pellets hurt, so I think they'll be shooting paintballs for a long time to come.

You know Meyer, I've never met anyone who has played paintball/wargames that hasn't thought the whole experience to be brilliant. Even if it's not the game for them, it's still a case of 'fantastic day out, bit expensive though'.
