Bingo...

As much as many bad things have been caused by it, imagine the chaos if people knew there was no afterlife, no higher consequence.... nobody really watching. Societies would tear themselves apart.

A necessary evil perhaps?

It would be no worse, or no better. We adapt our reasoning to suit the times, and we use religion to blame/gain succour, to suit our needs.

It's something we will never know. Nowadays I would inclined to agree with you, but in previous times, without purpose and direction people turn on each other...

so this begs another question, there are intelligent people in the heirachy of religion, why?.

A power trip perhaps, similar to a government position.

Well it depends on how you look at what you are looking at (if that makes sense) , when you see the bible what comes to your mind fables? you have to look deeper into the actual meaning of what is written and again look at fact and where they contradict, remember that there is no doubt that he existed because of his crucifixion being recorded, it just depends on how you should take it, the prophecy was fullfilled to detail (being written over 500 years before him) every action he took was too detail but as everyone has opinion many either doubt or devout there lives to there belief.

But as a guide to life no-one can oppose the way which was tought to live our lives as believe it or not our law and any other country which took too christianity 300+ years ago has adopted the bible as a model way to live, making the foundatiob of modern day law.

Ive had my ramble now im happy :)

There are definitely some very intelligent people who are religious, scientist actually (which raises more questions) I know a few personally. However, the depth of their belief is interesting;

They do not believe in the Bible word for word, they understand it was written by man, and therefore flawed. It was an interpretation of stuff that man doesn't and wasn't meant to understand. They hold faith in the fundamentals, they don't disbelieve evolution, or the creation of the universe - they just believe that’s how it happened and not why. The 'why' is where their faith kicks in.

Before the crock o ****e called the bible was penned humans mainly fought over land and natural resources.

Then someone made up a set of rules they thought others should live by and called it the bible, humans then started fighting over who's God was best

Then in the current times humans generally see through the rubbish of religion and we are going back to fighting over natural resources and land.

Any if anyone believes we are all desendants of Adam and Eve:rolleyes:

There will always be something to fight for.... it all boils down to control & survival (which are probably one and the same)

We are amazing and terrible at the same time. Who knows, without people fighting over a God, we might have wiped ourselves out long before now over resource, without the instilled fear of hell, more crazies might have resorted to Genocide without fear of spiritual punishment.

I am not naive enough to think that Genocide hasn't been previously caused by religious belief, but it does make you think what humans as a whole would be capable of if the majority (still) didn’t fear hell.

That is a common misconception about the teachings of the bible, Adam and Eve were only a metaphor, it was a story used by Jesus to show how sin was devised by adam eating the fruit of the tree (greed) which was condemned by God, as the snake (representing the devil) told adam how fantastic the fruit would be, and because of this action Adam and Eve's eyes were opened to what was arround them and realised that they were Naked, this is called Original Sin
