I'm a forklift tech, who gets around every for of business from retaillers to builders to paper factories. The building industry and all it's associated suppliers have died on their feet

New-build yes, commercial not so much, and social housing has boomed. Im a self employed tiler, and we have just had the busiest Nov Dec ever. We took on a load of tilers and one guy to run the office last month as we had too much on.

I am realistic though, I dont know how long it will last, but having this "scare" (and it is scary times) should be the kick up the backside that we all need. Knuckle down, and you will survive.

There is a real danger that we will talk ourselves into a mess. Chin up, confidence and maybe a different plan of action is in order.

Just pop yourself over to Corus's Redcar & Lackenby steel works and ask the several thousand employee's,i know they will have a different opinion.

If things dont improve by march onwards you can probably kiss goodbye to a long and proud history of steel production in the north east.

Hyster and Yale forklift factory where I work in the office, april this year were making 105 trucks per day.

December = 41

January = 32.

Looks like I will be out of a job too.

Mr Brown is loving this credit crunch. He might finally get his beloved Euro.

In my opinion the crunch is happening and its seen in many businesses near me however i feel the media is causing panic and just blowing it up unnecessarily causing the downturn to keep going.

In relation to paintball though. I heard that this had already hit hard. Werent many sponsorship deals cut or significantly reduced in the amount given a couple of months back?

Everyone should stop panicking unless you are involved in either the banking or stock industry and even that would have just been a slight hiccup nothing like what the media has made it.

Really.... you don't think that the contraction in financial services will affect the wider economy! Apart from the drop in tax receipts, those employed would be buying properties, going to the retail chains or eating out.

The source of the crunch can debated to death, but it's hardly a hiccup!!! Especially if you're now being impacted....

I'm loving the credit crunch.

I recently bought my first house, which im happy to say is a rather large 4 bedroom. I was paying near £1000 mortgage every month and im now paying just under £600.

The industry me and missus work in are not being affected.

Not to gloat as I know a lot of people are being hurt from this, but I'm just happy that I'm in a position where I'm actually better off than I was.

I'm now able to save more money from the drop in mortgage and continue paintballing.

Our local Barlow's depot in thurrock is struggling like hell, and this obviously that reflects in your builds.
They are cutting office staff quicker than a quick thing, the workshop has been cut from 4 engineers to 1, and mobile engineers have faded from around 40, 5 years ago, down to about 8, and they are on an overtime ban?
Considering i work for a "small" family run company, i was surprised that we now outnumber barlows by about 3-1, with 20 or so engineers on our firm compared to their 8, and our job seem safe and strong.
But Obviously i'm not counting my chickens, but we'll see?

I don't build 'em but i know there have been a lot of complaints about quality of late. We cut over 100 people 3 months ago, now looking at another 80 or so. Not massive numbers but it is still 30% of the workforce.

Overtime ban in place, shift allowances cut, and possibly moving to a 4 day week, or closing for one week every month to save on running costs. A lot of guys are looking at a 40% cut in wages, which incidentally make up 6-8% of the final cost of a forklift. Shows you how desperate they are to cut costs.
