it states that it is from april 2007 and is a continuation of a patent app from Jun 2004. long before the mini appeared.....

Not just the mini:

This patent looks to cover a worrying amount of different types of spool valve, including the Ion and many of its various aftermarket bolt kits which were developed by other companies.

Just to keep with tradition they have thrown in some crazy 'never gonna work' configuraions for good measure.
